Mine makes me get it yearly and I have had the pneumonia shot. Both are very important to us. As long as you don't take the live virus, you'll be good.
My Doc always said to make sure I don't have any active infection, and get it. My immune system is weak enough as it is, and I need all the help I can get. It's never caused me a problem either.
Definitely necessary. Just be sure you don't have a cold or anything when you get it.

got mine yesterday and don't even have a sore arm!
