I have to take folic acid with my MTX or I get a very sore tongue, mouth ulcers. They are a side effect of the MTX, folic acid helps with that but too much can lessen the effectiveness of the MTX. I frequently have a sore tongue the day after I inject the MTX.

I think it is all related to RA but as u know everyone is different and different symptoms for different people like l said l know l was not diagnosed with RA till about a year ago and lve had the sore coated tongue for years so for me l think it is part of the condition and my various types of anaemias l have hope the lower dose eases your problem

Thanks Hennie for your response lm glad you've worked out a solution, l am not on methotrexate on plaquenil, but my rheomo wants me to go on it as well as my RA is not controlled, my sore coated tongue is the same regardless of what l take, my might speak to my Rheumotologist next time l see him. To all if you who were kind enough to respond to my question, and anyone else out there suffering mouth problems, I saw my RA specialist this morning. She confirmed that the sore tongue and ulcers are caused by the methotrexate. She felt this may be happening to me now as she recently increased my dosage from 10mg per week to 15mg per week, taken as a single dose every Wednesday. To combat the mouth issues, she has increased my folic acid to 5mg every day (except methotrexate day), instead of 10mg 48 hours after my methotrexate dose. She also suggested I speak to the Pharmacist and purchase the best multi vitamin available. She said the folic acid does help to deal with effect of the methotrexate and by increasing the dosage to every day I should get some relief. Fingers crossed she is right. I guess there is really nothing here we Warriors didn't already know, but it was kind of comforting to to hear it from her. I hope this information is useful to any of you who are or have suffered these oral problems. I never knew eating could be so painful! Take care
