Has Anyone Experienced Mouth & Gum Sores, Everything Taste Like Cardboad After Taking 10mg Prednisone 9days? How Long Did It Last?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Arlington, TX

I was taking 10mg prednisone 3 _ 3xday, 2_3xday, 1 _ 3×day finished 7/31/16. I don't remember how long the symptoms lasted.
I have sores all over the inside of my mouth and gums, everything taste like cardboard. Has anyone experienced this after taking prednisone? How long did it last? What did you do for it?

Members shared their experiences with mouth and gum sores while taking prednisone and other RA medications, with many identifying methotrexate as a primary culprit rather than prednisone alone, and some noting symptoms improved after switching from tablets to injections or stopping methotrexate entirely. Several members recommended practical remedies including Magic Mouthwash (available by prescription or as a homemade mix of Benadryl, Maalox, and Anbesol), folic acid supplementation to counter depletion from RA medications, Biotene products for dry mouth, and eating potassium-rich foods like bananas since prednisone depletes potassium. A recurring theme was the exhausting trade-off of managing debilitating side effects like painful mouth sores in order to control disease activity, with members offering solidarity to those navigating high-dose prednisone and the difficult balance between preventing blindness or severe inflammation and enduring medication side effects.

They will go away when you stop prednisone. Remember prednisone is potassium stealing, eat your bannanas.

That's a lot of prednisone! I hope you are getting some relief. Sounds like it may be messing with your immune system big time. Have you tried taking B vitamins? I take B6 every day, and if I forget, I end up with mouth sores too. It's don't take prednisone on a daily basis, but occasionally will take 5 mg for a flare.

That was meant to say taper off my prednisone from 50mg to 30mg. 🤦‍♀️
