RA Or Fibromyalgia?

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭

This is something I'm currently struggling with, as I haven't yet been formally diagnosed. I have all the tender points of Fibro, but also my joints click and hurt. I know a lot of the symptoms overlap, such as stiffness, pain and fatigue, but how do you go about getting a diagnosis of either one or the other?

My Rheumatology appointment is in 2 days, and I guess I'm just worried he isn't going to diagnose me with anything. Too many years of being fobbed off by doctors I guess!

Members shared their experiences navigating the confusing overlap between rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia, with many having both conditions and describing how RA typically shows up through blood markers like ESR, CRP, and rheumatoid factor, while fibromyalgia is diagnosed through tender point testing when blood work comes back normal. Several members offered practical advice for the upcoming rheumatology appointment, including being patient with the diagnostic process, being prepared for multiple blood tests, and considering going off anti-inflammatory medications before testing to get more accurate inflammation readings. A recurring theme was the frustration of lengthy diagnostic journeys, with members emphasizing the importance of self-advocacy and thorough testing to ensure an accurate diagnosis, especially since it's possible to have both conditions simultaneously or even additional conditions like psoriatic arthritis.

Agreed - unless someone has a chronic illness, they just don't get it, even doctors! I hope you get the right treatment soon.

This is for Las. I take Savella for the Nerve Pain for my Fibromyalgia & Cyclobenzaprine for my muscles. 1-25mg of Savella took away my Nerve pain. I am now taking 2-25 MG in the morning & 2-25 at bedtime. I suffered with that Nerve pain for over 3 years. I did the research myself. There are doctors that have never heard of it. It's very costly, but I thought I would die from the Nerve pain. The do have a 50mg, for some reason it didn't work as good as 2-25's Good Luck!

I have both, just told about the fibromyalgia in Dec, his PA seemed to overlook it, as I look back I've had symptoms over 10 yrs w fibro, but I'm in constant pain, so I don't know what disease is causing what, for the last year thought it was from ra, I suppose when one flares up it probably sets the other off. More research to do though cuz I think fibromyalgia is my main enemy with my muscles if they're not being squeezed, they're burning, nerve pain, numb feet, I even have a tender spot on my scalp now. I am constantly burning up, last week I was severely dehydrated like I've never been, think from sweating even if it's very little it ads up, never use to be a sweater

I was diagnoised with fibro right away, but showed negative for the RA factor, even though had other systems. Dr had me go off all anti inflammatory drugs for 3-4 days before next blood work up. Sure enough my sed rate and c reactive showed inflammation. (And the pain was through the roof, so NSAIDS apparently do work) So Dr is treating me as sero negative RA and fibro. Best of luck to all of you!!
