I have my first rheumatologist visit next Tuesday after waiting since early February. Just wondering what I should expect at that first visit. Is it likely I will have to wait for tests before a prescription that might help alleviate my pain?
@A myRAteam Member Each dr is different as for prescribing. There is a good chance you could get prednisone to tide you over until results come back so the dr can best prescribe a cocktail for you. Each dr is different though. My dr gave me muscle relaxers and plaque ill out of the gate because he knew it was fibromyalgia and suspected RA. Good luck with your visit... Write everything down so you don't forget to mention something.
If you get a few minutes go out to the web and look at a brief overview of the different classes of RA meds - biologic, etc. My doctor gave me a bunch of materials about RA meds to discuss at my second visit. Whatever you know before going in will just get you that much further ahead. And I see you're already experiencing how long it can take to get an appointment! : :)Since you're already here you're light years ahead of where I was! Good luck and take care.
Try to keep a log of your daily symptoms until your visit: pain, locations, fatigue and limitations. Make a list of questions for your Rheum. Labs, when to expect results and a treatment plan. Definitely explain what has NOT worked .
I 100% agree with Gabreal! Tell them every little thing you can think of, even if you think it might not matter. Also, don't feel like you have to put on a brave face. They are there to support you however they can and my Rheumatologist has become a great resource for me when I have been upset or scared about my health. They will most likely start you on some kind of preliminary treatment that may be adjusted once your lab results come back. It will probably be a very long day, with lots of questions, tests, x-rays, and new info, but if you stay engaged and honestly share what you can it will be a good first step to improving your health.
Labs (hopefully) lol many doctors forget so if they don't ask for any ask the doctor to order some. Evaluation of joints and mobility. Tell them your aches and pains nothing is minor.
