i was told the shingles shot was a live vaccine and not to take it but the flu and pnuemonia shot was ok

Gabreal, my rheumatologist also strongly recommended it, along with the pneumonia and shingles vaccines. I also work for a hospital system that requires (and provides) the flu vaccine unless you have a good reason not to get it. I still have a low grade fever off and on and a cough, but am feeling better overall. Thank you!

I don't get the flu shot, mainly because I don't get sick. The last time I had the flu was well over ten years ago. Even with my immune system depressed, I still don't get sick.

Can I take the shingles vaccine along with the methotrexate and folic acid? I have been holding off taking the meth and folic as I heard you couldn't take both together. Does anyone know? Seeing my Rheumi tomorrow morn.

With a suppressed immune system it could last over a week. I was told to get the shot since it is a dead virus. I am due in September. I have to take the shot because I am an RN and work in the hospital. The fever is actually a good thing. Viruses can't tolerate temps of 100 or higher. Just keep the fever under 101 if possible because you will be miserable if it gets much over that. Just keep drinking fluids and rest as much as possible, much like having the flu. Your body will build antibodies during this time and if you are exposed to the flu later, it should be a much milder case. If your temperature keeps rising, try alternating Tylenol (Acetomenophen) and Motrin (Ibuprofen). You can take each of them 4 hours apart. Try taking one then the other 2 hours later if your temp is high. Obviously, if your temp is under control, don't take the meds as often. Just be sure to stay under 4 grams of Tylenol in a 24 hour period. More than that can cause permanent liver damage. Of course, if you are still having problems, call your doctor. He may have other suggestions. Ice packs around your neck, wrists and groin area will also bring down your temp, but be sure to wrap them in a towel to keep the ice from damaging the skin.
