I will be starting methotrexate on Saturday for the first time. Any side effects I should be worried about?

Members shared their experiences starting methotrexate for rheumatoid arthritis, with many reporting side effects like nausea, fatigue, headaches, and hair thinning that often improved after the first few weeks or months. The most consistent advice across the thread was to take folic acid daily to reduce side effects, take methotrexate at night with food to sleep through nausea, and give the medication at least 4 to 10 weeks to start working before judging its effectiveness. A recurring theme was the balance between managing uncomfortable side effects and finding relief from RA symptoms, with many members emphasizing patience, close communication with their rheumatologist about dosage adjustments, and watching for serious reactions like mouth sores or elevated liver enzymes.

I had pretty severe nausea, but wouldn't actually throw up. I started drinking ginger ale - one of the natural brands that has real ginger in it - and that helped a lot. I also got very fatigued. These symptoms lasted about 36 to 48 hours after taking the mtx.

I took MTX for about 18 years, but am off of it now. It was affecting my red blood cell production so I had to go off of it. Over the years the problems have been: many infections especially upper respiratory, mouth and lip sores, HUGE hair loss.

I agree. Having a positive attitude is very important. We bought a lot of seedlings (veg & flowers) yesterday and because I was feeling so good I decided to plant just about everything in one go. Umm... well, today I have very stiff buttocks!!!!!!! Lol. When I went to the nursery today I had the teller in giggles with all my groaning when I had to pick up something I'd dropped. Eventually both of us were laughing like kids and other customers looking to see what was so funny. It was nice to see the funny side of my situation and best of all the teller treated me normally. Bless her, such a lovely lady.

Methotrexate does take a while to kick in---a few months for me. I also take folic acid daily to prevent side effects. I found this med to be very effective
