Members shared varied experiences with hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), with many taking it for years alongside other RA medications, noting that while some experienced no side effects, others reported nausea, dizziness, stomach upset, hair loss, and concerns about vision changes. Several members emphasized the critical importance of annual eye exams, as the medication can cause eye damage, with some reporting that their rheumatologists require eye exam reports before refilling prescriptions and that taking the medication with food helps reduce stomach issues. A recurring theme was the solidarity around managing side effects through practical strategies like taking pills before bedtime, using peppermint for nausea, reducing dosage when hair loss occurs, and accepting trade-offs when the medication provides relief from RA symptoms.

I have taken Plaquenil (same thing) since 2009, but also on Methotrexate at the same time. I have hair loss and my teeth are starting to break down, now that could be all the medications I take or it could be the RA but as I told my Rheumatologist if I can stay out of a wheelchair or bedridden it's worth it. I take my RA meds before bedtime and avoid most side effects that way for the nausea I eat peppermint candies or peppermint tea. I hope this helps

Thank you all for answering me! I will definitely get my eyes checked regularly. I am having cataract surgery on both eyes so hopefully it doesn't make them worse . I won't be taking the meds until all surgery is done . So here is hoping it goes ok for me . Hugs to you all !
