Tired And Sleeping Alot.

A myRAteam Member asked a question 💭
Jackson, NJ

Hi everyone. Is anyone else having a hard time staying awake? I have been going to bed early. But when I awaken I feel as if I never slept. If I sit on the chair or coach all i want to do is sleep. It's becoming scary. I use to be such an agile person. Now I am lucky I can make it through my day.

Members deeply resonated with the struggle of overwhelming fatigue in rheumatoid arthritis, describing it as even more debilitating than pain itself, with many sharing experiences of falling asleep unintentionally in public places and feeling unable to complete basic daily tasks like showering. Several members found relief through vitamin supplementation, particularly high-dose vitamin D and folic acid as prescribed by their doctors, while others mentioned that thyroid medication helped even when blood work appeared normal, and some noted temporary relief from steroids or strategic use of caffeine with pain medications. A recurring theme was the importance of rest without guilt, pacing activities throughout the day, and recognizing that extreme fatigue is a legitimate symptom of RA that deserves medical attention and lifestyle adjustments.

Extreme fatigue is a symptom of RA, just like pain & swelling. For a long time, I was so tired all the time ,it felt like I was in a drunken stupor. I couldn't focus on things and was extremely forgetful. During a flare, it's even worse. My doctor put me on folic acid. It's helped a lot. Try to get 8 hours sleep each night and try to lie down in the afternoon , even if it's only for 15 minutes.

Yes, I feel so exhausted every day. I'm exhausted just from being exhausted!

Extreme fatigue is part of RA. My doctor put me on 50,000 units of vitamin D 1 time a week for 7 weeks. Then just 2000 units a day of Vitamin D3. And Folic Acid everyday with the rest of my medicines.

It is my understanding from my doctors that RA sufferers frequently need thyroid supplementation even though our numbers are within normal limits. I have had more energy since I began thyroid meds.

Its a tuff one to work thru. I can tolerate the pain better than the daily struggle to get myself moving. HATE IT!! I panic if Im given early morn appt.........Will I sleep night before.....how many hours do I have to get up early so I can slowly get moving......trying to change my diet, added supplements, increasing h2o intake.......anything to kick myself in gear........
