I have refused to use them. Hard headed I guess. My first Rheumatologist prescribed a wheelchair for me. He told me to go home and forget about walking...to get used to a wheelchair. I really didn't think giving up at the beginning was going to help. If I get unstable I use a walker. If my foot hurts too much to walk on I use crutches.
Throughout my life, I have fluctuated from using a wheelchair, walker, cane and crutches. It all depended upon my pain level and area of the body that was affected. A week ago, a cane due to my right ankle... today, nothing...
I found this article: http://ragimp.blogspot.com/2012/02/when-should-...
I've used a cane for several years due to a cranky hip and repair surgery. I still have to rely on it occasionally. I think you can ask your RA Dr. for the application and need for the handicap form.
Laurel, I love your attitude!!!!
